Public Art Platform @ GoMA presents in July 2009:

Whispering of Flowers -

Watercolor Exhibition by Au Yeung Nai Chim

(English Translation)

I wrote a casual poem to describe my watercolour painting of White Lily. I lay that pleasant unction to my soul - like sipping a cup of warm tea or a glass of lemonade. It is not simulative, but can last for long time.
(English Translation)

In the snowstorm
Stands the White Lily
Safely inside a bottle
With crystal-clear water

Tall is the White Lily
Tender in the face
She spreads her pure fragrance
In total silence

I sat in front of the window
Without any disturbance
Hear the song sang by her
Which expresses her soul

We were sitting face to face
Without a word
But our soul communicated
And enjoy a talk of thousands words
Public Art Platform @ The Gallery of Modern Art (GoMA) has been striving to bring a variety of artwork in different medium into living space. Summer is the season of flower, so GoMA invited a recognized local artist, Mr. Au Yeung Nai Chim to present a series of flower watercolour paintings from 16 to 31 July 2009. Through the unique perspective of artist, different shapes, colours and postures of flower are depicted and invite viewers to revel in summer blossom.

Au Yeung Nai Chim, born in Xin Hui, Guangdong Province in 1931. In his early days, he received training in western art. He is able to master a variety of medium, include sketch, watercolour, oil painting, engraving and comic drawing. He loves painting landscapes and human portrait, but also interested in painting flower, fish and cat. In 1950’s, his artworks have been selected and exhibited at the Hua Nan Art Exhibition in Guangzhou and National Youth Art Exhibition. Some of his artworks are collected by National Art Museum of Beijing and Hong Kong Museum of Art. His career path also follows his passion in arts, from book illustrator, graphic designer, to editor of art magazines in 1980’s and art teacher of art schools. In recent days, he concentrates on the study of watercolour and Chinese water-and-ink techniques. His son - Au Yeung In Ji - is also a famous Hong Kong intellectual. The father and son had shared a column in CUP magazine and have organized an exhibition together.

Au Yeung’s fame mostly comes from his landscape paintings. His landscapes paintings reflect vivid lifelikeness with only a few patches ink. No matter is “emotion derivates from the environment (觸景生情)" or "blending of emotion with the environment (融情於景)", he is able to master the spiritual concepts of Chinese painting and applied them on his landscape paintings. He brings up a theory of using the knowledge of oil painting and Chinese water-and-ink to get the “meridians” of watercolour through (以油畫、水墨畫的知識打通水彩的經脈). In order to broaden the techniques of watercolour painting, he tried to apply the colour-mixing method of oil painting and the water-and-ink technique of colour exaggeration to watercolour painting. He believes that the function of a painting is not only to create the image, but also to give a sense of art, i.e. depicts the beauty of nature by refined painting techniques and creates an artistic enjoyment for viewers. Through a series of floral paintings, Au Yeung shows his unique watercolour painting techniques, as well as creating an elegant atmosphere which is seldom found in his painting. By manipulating the contrast between richness and lightness of colours, he created a sense of tranquility. Au Yeung named the exhibition as "Whispering of Flowers" because he wanted to invite the viewers to enjoy a conversation with flowers. "Flower does not speak. What I mean by enjoying a conversation with flower is to listen to your soul. I will be grateful If viewers can use his or her sense and emotion to enjoy the painting and actually feel the fragrance of the flowers", said by Au Yeung.
