History & BackgroundI was born in 1969 in the South East of England. As long
as I can remember I have always had a creative streak;
drawing and designing from a very early age.
I attended Herriot Watt University in Scotland where
I studied textiles and fashion. This led me to my interest
in abstract work which I became more and more involved
in. I began to design work incorporating heavy texture
using materials such as gold and silver leaf. My use of
colour at the time lent itself to the advent of the interior
design boom of the early 2000’s and my work began to
sell in large quantities worldwide. I have always previously been keen to develop my work
by fusing certain qualities of my abstract work into real
life imagery.
I live in a beautiful part of Hertfordshire surrounded by
nature and rolling countryside. I live with my partner
Keith and our 11 year old son Charlie - not forgetting the
fourth family member our Golden Retriever, Doug. Ideas & InspirationsI use my surroundings for my inspiration. I take Doug
for long walks to nearby Hatfield forest. This is a National
Trust site which ws once the location of a hunting lodge
used by Henry VIII. The forest covers a large unspoilt
area featuring a large lake and quiet backwaters. It’s
here that I am in my element using my sketch pad or
taking photographs. Form Palette to PictureOnce back in the studio I sketch out the scene of my work
marking areas where I want to build texture for effect.
The vibrancy created by the colours I use enables the
piece to border delicately between abstract and real life
imagery. I aim to create the calm and tranquil feelings
I gain from my earlier experiences in the forest and
around the lake. A day in the Life of ...I tend not to work any set hours but typically during the
summer and late spring months I will start in the early
hours sometimes at first light. I find I have a lot of energy
at this time and my passion for creativity is at its highest.
I paint in a large, bright conservatory at the back of the
house usually with Doug as company. I like to have the
doors wide open, chilled music playing; and being so
close to nature I feel totally inspired. |
